PANIC BEATS begins with a totally nude woman with welts on her body, ru nning through a misty forest full of decayed skeletons. A knight on horseback is chasin g her, and we soon lear n that he i s Alaric de Marn ac (a wicked c haracter Naschy fir st cre ated for HORROR RISES FR OM TH E TOMB), vic iously killing her for her unfaithful ways . After the credits role, we a re taken to t he present where a descendent of Mar nac named Paul (Nas chy) is married to the wealthy Genevièv e (Julia Saly) w as has some serious heart pr oblems. Paul deci des to take her to his ancestr al home in t he country for some p eace and quiet, but the superstitious-filled setti ng opens a Pandora’s Box of terrib le occurrences. We soon discover th at Paul is a r eal son -of-a-bitch who plans to sca re his wife to death, p lanni ng to control her fortune and continue his secret a ffair with sedu ctive bad girl Mireille (Silvia M iró), who ha ppens to b e the niece of the tarot card-readin g housek eeper, Mabile (Lola Gaos). P aul’s malevolent scheme works, but he still has to worry about an additio nal money-hungry mi stres s (this guy really gets ar ound!), the unforgi ving Mabi le, as well as new fianceé Mi reille who might be hi ding a thing or two herself. Mo re g risly murders follow, and the ghost of Marnac r eturn s from hell to punish the most despicable human character in the fi lm. PAN IC BEATS w as also written by Naschy (under his real name Jacinto Molina) wh o injects th e film wit h an old-fashioned spooky house m otif, beefed up wi th a modern movie se nse of violence and sexuality. T he film offers nothing t oo innovat ive storywise, and even Naschy admits on the disc’s extras that it was partly insp ired by GASLIGHT and RE BECCA, but h e seems to just toss i n a hodgep odge of explo itation and horr or ingredients, w hile deliv ering a stylish and enjoyabl e effort with a number of twists and some genuinely chilli ng mo ments. The camera shots and lighting are both effective, and t here's e ven do es a cool set-up (much like what Fre ddie Francis did in THE SKU LL and THE CREEPIN G FLESH) wh ere we see the point of view of M arnac through his dar k he lmet as he sta lks his female prey. Graphic ally, w e are exposed t o everything from a plat e of bloody eyeballs , to victim s being beaten relen tlessly wi th the various M edieval weap ons affixed on the house’s wal ls (for exam ple, someone is axed i n the st omach, followed by the soaked e ntrails oozing out!). N aschy’ s most frequent 1980s leading lady, Jul ia Saly , is not given m uch t o do, but wi th her offbeat lo oks, is a nice pr esence noneth eles s. The prominent female star here is Silvia Miró who is seen in the buff freq uently, and she certa inly m akes for some well-appre ciated Euro st arlet eye candy.
