Two differen ces between this Austrian version and the generally available America n version are immediately obviou s they differ both in their length and in the language of the intertitles. The American version is only 1,883 metres long - at 18 frame s per se cond a difference of some 7 minutes to the Austrian ve rsion w ith 2,045 metres. Whe reas we originally presumed o nly a negl igible difference, re sulting f rom the varying leng th of the intertitles, a direct comparison has nevertheles s shown tha t the Aust rian version differ s from the A merica n versio n both in the montage and in the durati on of individual scenes. Yet how could it hap pen that the lat er re gional distribution of a canonical US silent film was longer than the original versi on The prevalen t American vers ion of Blind Husbands does not corresp ond to the versio n show n at the premiere of 1919. This li ttle-known fact was already published by Richa rd Koszars ki i n 1983. Th e film was re-released by Un iversal Pict ures in 1924, in a ver sion that was 1,365 feet (416 met res) shor ter. At 18 frames per second, t his amounts to a time dif ference of 20 minutes! Ti tles were altered, snippets of action removed and a t leas t one maj or scene taken o ut entirely, whe re von Ste uben an d Margaret visit a smal l local chapel. (Koszarski ) From the pres ent state of research w e can assume that all the known Americ an c opies of the film d erive from this shortened re-release versi on, a co py of which Universal donat ed to the Mu seum of Modern Art in 1941. According to Koszarski the ori ginal negative of the film was destroyed sometime between 1956 and 1961 and has therefo re been irretrievabl y lost. Thi s informati on c asts a n interesting l ight on the Au strian vers ion, which can b e da ted to the period be tween the summer of 1 921 and the winter of 1922. Furthermore, the copy is some 200 metres longer than the US ve rsion of 1924. If one follows the de tails given by Richard Kosza rski an d Arthur Lennig, this means that, as far as both i ts date an d its length a re co ncer ned, the Austrian version lies almost exactly in the middle betwe en the (lost) ve rsion shown at the premiere and the re-released one.A large part of the additio nal length of the film ca n be traced to cuts that were made to the 1924 ve rsion in almost every shot. Koszarsk i describes ho w the begin ning and the end of scen es were trimmed , in ord er to speed up the film. However, more exciting was the dis cove ry that th e Austrian v ersion contains shots that are missing in the American one - sho tscountershots, intertitles - and furthermor e sho ws differences in its montage (i.e. the placi ng of the indiv idual shot s within a s equence) .
