Novelist Joseph Shearing speci alized in u sing real cas es which took place in Victorian En gland, altering them for fictional purposes. MOSS ROSE i n 1947 was the first film to be made from his novels, the n in 1948 two of his works were adapted for the screen, this film and THE MARK OF CAI N. The movie stars Todd as a recently widowed missionary re turning to her home in England f rom Jama ica. During the voyage, she meets Milland, a charmi ng th ough dangerous r ascal who is wanted by p olice in connect ion wit h some unsavory d ealings. Mi lland contracts m alar ia w hile onboard the ship and Todd nurs es him back to health. In Lon don, Todd settles into her ho me, taking in boa rder s to make ends meet. Milland arrives, moves in, an d proclaims h is lov e for her. Todd is thrilled, b ut it se ems rather obvious that M illand is only toyin g with her. Milland find s some letters written to h er by her friend, Fitzge rald, in which Fitzgerald reveals some of her sexual indiscretio ns. Since Fitzgerald is now married to the wealthy Huntley, Mil land believes he can use the letters to blac kmail Fitz gerald. Todd's lo ve for Mi lland is so great that s he goe s al ong with the plan. Huntley, however, learns of the schem e and also uncove rs de tails o f Milland 's shady past. F earing for her lover' s safety, Todd poisons H untley, then remains silent wh en Fitzg erald i s arr ested for the murde r. Milland has by now genuin ely fallen in l ove with Todd and the two make plans to leave England. Before they can depart, one of Milla nd's former lovers shows up an d Todd, in a jealous ra ge, kills Milland, then turns he rself into the p olice. This is an intriguing film , although a little on the talky side. T he p erform ances ar e excellent througho ut, w ith M illand shining as the c ad, the type of role in which he exce lled. Thoug h he s pent most of his time making films in the US, he occas ionally returned to his nat ive England for a pr oduction and this was h is first Br itish fil m since FR ENCH WITHOU T TEARS in 1939. Director Allen was also a n Englishman who chose to wo rk in the US, this being h is first directorial effor t in h is homela nd.
