Novelist Joseph Shea ring specialized in usin g real cases which to ok p lace i n Victorian England, al tering them for fictional purpos es. The movie stars Todd as a recently widowed missionary returning to her home in Engla nd from Jamaica. Dur ing the voyage, she mee ts Milland, a charming though dangerous rascal wh o is wante d by police in connection with some unsavory de alings. Milland contracts malaria whil e onb oard the sh ip and Todd nurses h im back to hea lth. In London, Todd s ettles into her home, taking in boarders to make ends meet. Milland arriv es, moves in, and proclaim s his love for her. To dd is t hrilled, but it seems rather ob vious that M illand is on ly toying with her. Since Fitz gerald i s now married to the wealt hy Huntley, Milland be lieves he can use the letters to b lackmail Fi tzgerald . Todd's love for M illand is so great that she goes along with the plan. Huntley , howev er, learn s of the scheme and als o uncovers detail s of Milla nd's shady pas t. Fearing for her love r's safety, Todd poi sons Huntley, t hen remains silent whe n Fitzgerald is arrested for the murder . Milland has by now genuinely fallen in love with To dd and the two make plans to leave England. Bef ore they can depart, one of Milland's former lovers shows up and Todd, i n a jealous r age, kills Milland, then turns herself i nto the police. This is an intriguing film, although a little on th e talky side. The perfo rmances are excelle nt through out, with Milland shini ng as the c ad, the t ype of role in which he exce lled. Thoug h he spent most of his time making fil ms in the U S, he occasionally returne d to his native England for a product ion and this was his first British film sinc e FRENCH WI THOUT TEARS in 1939. Director Allen wa s also an Englishm an who chose to work in the US, this being his first directoria l effort in his ho meland.
