Middle cla ss student Bob Letelli er enters a new wor ld when he meets Alain, a f ree-th inking rebel who, along with his group of young Parisians, has opted for a life of instant gratification instead of work a nd commitme nt. At a party, B ob meets a young woman, Mic, who a ppears to be jus t as carefree and cynical as Alain. Mi c's only dr eam is to own a lux ury car , and wit h Bob's help, she manages to find the money to but it. Mic's fr iend Clo discovers she is pregn ant and, no t knowing w ho the father is, she asks Bob t o marry her . When they next meet at a party , Bob and Mic deny that they have an y feelings for one anot her - a declaration that soon lead s to tragedy ... Marcel Carn é is widely regarded as one of the s tandard be arers of Fre nch quality cinema of t he 1930s an d 1940s, responsible for such maste rpieces as Quai des br umes (193 8) and Les Enfants du Paradis (1945). How ironic then that, in 1958, towards the end of his fi lm-making career, he should m ake a f ilm which dared to portra y the atti tudes and behaviour of th e 1950s you th, in a w ay that effectively capt ures t he m ood and sentime nt of the time. Les Tri cheurs was a hugely contro versial film, not l east because of its blatant depicti on of a dolesc ent free -love, and was ev en banned in some regions of F rance. It also receive d some intensely unf avourable revie ws, most no tably from the yo ung hotheads on the Cah iers du cinéma s uch as Fran çois Truffaut who cited this film as a pr ime example of the d ecline of French cinema into mediocrity. In spite of al l this negative press, the film proved to b e an astonishing com mercial success, attra cting five million cinema -goers, and was awarded t he Grand Pri x du Cinéma fra nçais in 1958. Whi lst Les Tricheurs is not as flawless as Carné's earl ier masterp ieces, it is nonetheless a signifi cant work, having the po wer to both shock and move it s audience, wh ilst having great entertainment va lue. It evokes the mood of its time in a w ay tha t few French films of this per iod did, depicting you ng people as pleasure-seek ing rebels, rej ecting the austerity and discipline of t he previou s generatio n whilst pu rsuing a life without cares, respon sibilities or love. Similarities with James De an's films of the 1 950s (most notabl y Rebel wi thout a Cause) are apparen t, although Carné's treatment of young p eople i s far more abstract - i n his fil m th ey m erely symbolise a world that has lost its wa y, more or less victims of post-war pr osperity. Although the young people in Le s Trich eurs lack the a uthenticity to be totally credible, the film do es make an importan t, and indeed quite dist urbin g point, abo ut where the permissive society may be heading . Much of the pleasure of the film i s in the performa nces from its four lea d actors, Jacques Charrier, Pascale Petit, Lau rent Terzie ff and And réa Parisy, althoug h only Terzieff is really convincin g in his role. Marcel Carné originally c onsidered Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo for the p arts o f Bob and Alain respectivel y, before o pting for Charrier a nd Terzieff. As a consolati on, Carné offered Belmondo a smaller part in the film - alas to o small for the act or to be noti ced by t he publ ic.
