The histor y of Danish coun try church archite cture is told by show ing scen es of how the church was used by the congregation, be ginni ng with t he celebra tion of mass in a small and simple wooden chu rch 800 years ago, and e nding with the congregation s inging in a villag e church of to-day. The development and the growth of the patte rn of chu rch archit ecture is shown. Dreyer in this fi lm shows a series of church es from different p eriods with chur chgoe rs in period clothing. Each p eriod is sepa rated by a shot of a church bell doub le-exposed on the sky. Although the film has a vibrant and instruc tive way of communicating the different epochs and styles to stu dents, it does not exhibit the artistic quality that usually di stinguish es a Dreyer film, except perhaps in some o f the costumes, which were origi nally ma de for D ay of Wrath. The board of Dansk K ulturf ilm in autumn 1945 decided th at the ir planned c hurch fil m would exclusively be about vi llage churc hes. Dreyer would rework t he script t hat was written by editor and folk high-school principal Bernhard Jens en, aided by a commi ttee of experts consisting of architect H. Lønb org-Jensen and Victor Hermanse n, curator at the Natio nal Mus eum of Denmark. Dreyer had a first draft re ady in mi d-March, ent itled Kirken er et gammelt Hus (The Church Is an Old House), which was distributed to t he memb ers of the committee for their comment s. In the last half of July, D reyer a nd Victor Hermansen travelled the countr y to look at suitable churche s. They researched the details and at Dreyer ’s requ est a n umber of technical changes w ere mad e to the churche s, including the removal of porcelain holders for electrical wiring in Tveje Merløse Chur ch. On 4 July, Dreyer went in advance to Ringkø bing. Shooting was set to start a fe w days later with the ar rival of the director of photography, Preben Frank, who had fallen off a la dder and broken his leg, For tunately, he was ready to cautiously start working again within a few days, wit h his le g in a cas t. Otherwise, th e production wen t without a glitch. Everywhere, Dreyer said, they were well r ecei ved at the v icarage s and they h ad no proble m getting e nough extras. On 1 august, they returned to Cop enhagen with almost all their footage in the can. They only n eeded to film th e chur ch in Sk elby, where the weat her had b een against them, pl us a Swedish wooden ch urch in Hedared . The economy was distressed s o soon a fter the war, especially whe n it came to foreign cur rency, but there were no real woo den church es left in Denmar k and build ing an int erior set in the studio w ould be too expensive. The finished film was shown for the fir st time on 24 Septe mber 19 47 to a small, closed circle, which include d the Minister for Ecclesiastical Affai rs.
