The hist ory of Da nish country church ar chitectur e is told by showing scenes of how the church w as used by the congregation, beginning with th e celebration of mass in a small and simple wooden church 800 y ears ago, and en ding with th e congregat ion singing in a village church of to- day. The development and the growt h of the pattern of church architecture is shown. Dreyer in this film shows a series of churche s from diffe rent p eriods with churchgoers in period clothing. Each period is separated by a sh ot of a church bell double-exposed on t he sky. Although t he film has a vibrant a nd instructive wa y of communicating the differe nt epoc hs and sty les to students, it does no t exhib it the artistic qual ity tha t us ually distin guishes a Dreyer film, ex cept perhaps in some of the costumes , which were originally made f or Day of Wr ath. The board of D ansk Kulturfilm in autumn 1945 decided that th eir planned chur ch film would ex clus ively b e about village churches. Dreye r wo uld rework t he script that was writ ten by editor and folk hi gh-school principal Bernh ard Jensen, aided by a comm ittee of exp erts consisting of architect H. Lø nborg-J ensen and Victor Hermansen, curator at t he National Museum of Denmark. Dreyer had a first draft re ady in mid-March, entitled Kirken er et gam melt Hus (The C hurch Is an Old House), whi ch was di stributed to the members of the com mittee for t heir comments. In the last half of July, Dreyer and Victor H ermansen travelled the country t o lo ok at suitable churches. They res earched the details and at Dr eyer’s request a nu mber of technical changes were mad e to the churches, including the removal of porcelain holde rs for electrical wiring in Tve je Merløse Church. On 4 Ju ly, Dreye r we nt in adva nce to Ringkøbing. Shooting was set to start a few days lat er with t he arrival of the dire ctor o f photogr aphy, Preben Frank, who had fallen off a ladder and broken his leg, Fo rtunately, he was ready to cautiously start working again within a few da ys, with his leg in a cast. Otherwi se, the production we nt without a glitch. Everywhere, Dre yer said, they were well rec eived at the vicarage s an d they had no problem g etting enough extras . On 1 august, they returned to Copenhagen wit h almo st all their fo otag e in the can. They only nee ded to film the church in Skelby, wh ere the weather had be en again st them, pl us a Swedish wooden church in Hedared. The economy was d istressed so soon after the war, especially when it came to foreign currenc y, but th ere were no real wooden churches left in D enmark and building an interior set in the studio would be too expens ive. The finished film was shown for the fi rst time on 24 Septe mber 1947 t o a small, cl osed circle, which inclu ded the Minister for Ecclesias tical Affairs.
