Fraught wi th over obvious symb olism, Hartley's early feature is nonetheless a joy to watch. Hal here sh ows us his uncann y ability to cast hi s characters perfectly came e arly in his career. Adrienne Shelley is a ne ar perfe ct foil to herself, equal p arts annoying t een burgeoning in her sexuality (though usin g sex for se veral years); obs essed with doom and inspired by idealism gone wrong she is deceptively – and simultan eously – complex and simple. Her Audrey ins pires so many levels of symboli sm it is almo st embar rassingly rich (e.g., her mode ling career be ginning with photos of her f oot – culminating her doing nu de (but unseen) work; Manhattan mov e; Europe t rip; he r stealing, then sle eping with the mechanics wrench, e tc.) As Josh, Robert Bu rke gives a n absolutely maste rful perform ance. A r eformed prisonerpen itent he ret urns to his home town t o face down past dem ons, accept his lot and begin a ne w life. Dressed in black, and repeatedly mistaken for a priest, he corre cts everyone (I'm a mechan ic), yet the symbol ism is rich he abstains from alcoh ol, he prac tices celibacy (i s, in fact a virgin), and se emingly has taken on vows of poverty, and hu mility as well. The hu mility seems hardest to swallow seeming, at times , almost false, a p retense. Yet, as we learn more of Josh we see genuinenes s in his modesty, that his humility is indeed earnest and belie vable. What seems ironic is the character is fairly forthright in his si mpli city, yet so richly drawn it becomes the viewer who wants to make him out as more than what he actu ally is. A fascinat ingly wri tten character, perfectly played. Th e scene between Josh a nd Jane (a wonde rful, young Edie Falco . . . You need a woman not a girl) is hilarious . . . real. But Hartl ey can't leave it as su ch and his trick, havi ng the actors repeat the dialogue over-and-over becomes frustratingly arty and annoyin g . . . until again it becomes hilarious . What a te rrific sens e of bizar re reality this lends the film (like k ids in a perpetual am notare too argument). Hartl ey's weaves al l of a smal l neighborhood's idiosyncrasi es int o a tapestry of seeming stereot ypes bu t which delves far beneath the s urface, the catalyst being that everyone believes t hey k now what the unbelievable truth of the tit le is, yet n o two people can agree (including our hero) on what exac tly that truth is.
