Ferna ndo Di Leo's Milano Cal ibro 9 is an out-and-out ma sterpiece of Italian Crime cinema and, in my opinion, one of th e most astonis hing crime st ories ever t old. The f irst film in Di Leo's exce llent 'Milieu' trilogy, Milano Calibro 9 was follo wed by La Mala Or dina (aka. Manhunt, also 1972) and the bri lliant Il Boss (1973) . The three films are not connected s tory-wise, but all three are excellent, and hig hly realistic portrayals of organized crim e. As far as I am conce rned M anhunt is (allthough exce llent) slightly inferior to this one and Il Boss which both stand out as absolute all-time highlights of crime cin ema. Mila no Calibro 9 is the best of them all, a film that is astonishing in all aspects, be i t the inge nious plot that, apart from a compelling sto ry and clever twists, includes social criticism, the perfo rmances, the gritty atmosphere and su spense or t he brilliant score. I can har dly fin d the ri ght words to express my admiration for this masterp iece which easily ranks among the greate st Gangste r flicks ever brought to scre en. Ga stone Moschi n st ars as Ugo P iazza, a tough and ellip tical ex-con vict who has just been released from prison. Immediately after his releas e, Ugo is approached by members of the Milan mob lead by t he irascible gangster Rocco (Mario Adorf), as the y suspect him to be responsible for the d isappearance of a larg e sum of money belonging to their boss, an American (Lionel Sta nder) who controls the organized crime i n Mil an... Milano Calibro 9 is a film that deliv ers an astonishingly realistic mood o f the underworld like hardly anoth er. The intriguing storyline goes in hand with interesting characters, raw a tmosphere , suspense and b reathtaking action, social criticism and brutal violence . The film is s imply stunning from the beginning to the end, which is even intensi fied by the b rilliant s core, a collaboration of the famous composer Lui s Enríquez B acalov and the Italian Progressive Rock band Osanna. U go Piazza must be one of the most ch arismatic gangs ter characters ever in c inema, and Gastone Moschin was the prefect choice for the role. Moschin del ivers a b rilliant p erformance, and th e rest of the cas t is also great. M ario Adorf is irascible like a rabi d dog as the ferocious g angster Rocco, a role that fits him like a glove. The great L ionel St ander fits perfectly in his role of the Ame rican Mafia D on. The t wo cop characters in the film ar e playe d by two of the greatest regulars of Italian genre-cinema, Luigi Pisti lli and Frank Wolff (who com mitted suicide b efore the film was released). The ravishing B arbara Bouchet is astonishi ng and i ncred ibly sexy in the r ole of Ugo Piaz za's stripper girlfri end. Bouchet is both a stunnin g beauty and an excel lent act ress and this i s doubtl essly one of her mos t memorable roles. This is also a political film and di rector Di Leo embedded a l ot of social criticism ab out topics l ike corrupt ion. Thi s film simply has everything o ne can po ssibly desire in cinema. Films like Mil ano Calibro 9 are t he reason why I love cin ema. Th is is an ab solute masterpiece in all regards and, without exagg eration, one of the greatest Crime flicks ever made!
