Eric Braed en stars as Dr. C harles Forbin, who has created a super computer named Colossus, bui lt solely for the purpos e of controlling the nuclear defen ses of th e Western alliance. It isn't too long after, howev er, that the Russians announce that th ey too h ave built a similar computer for t hose same pu rposes on th eir si de--Guardi an. And when the two machines begin sharing info rmation at a speed nobody can believe, a n att empt is made t o disable the m. This unfortunatel y just raises the mach ines' ire; a nd in retaliation , they launch their weapo ns at each other's hom e nations . The result is a chilling scenario that i s potentia lly becoming all t oo real th ese days. COLOSSUS THE FORBIN PROJECT was not a big hit at the box office for various rea sons. One is that its cast w asn't exactly wel l known. Another reason is that its ending isn' t exactly a happy one. Stil l a third reason is that Universal had trouble trying to promo te it in the wake of the h uge success of Stan ley Kubric k's 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY. The latter reason is obviou s Colos sus and Guardian, like HA L in the Kubrick movie, become central char acters here. The difference here is that while HAL malfun ctions due to a programmi ng conflict, Colossus and Guardian remain all too stable , convince d beyond a d oubt that they kn ow how t o protect Mankind better than Man himself. As the co mputers poi nt out One i nevitabl e rule is that Mankind is his own wo rst enemy. Jo seph Sargent's direction is efficient, and the s pecial effects work o f Albert Whitlock still ma nages t o work des pite its obvious ag e.
