People wait for the Ark to arr ive and rescue them while t heir habitat falls apart. De lving deep into the dusty and long abandonded vaults of b-cine ma in search of lost gems always le aves me wi th a bittersweet t aste. On one hand the discovery of unexpected ge ms where no one woul d think them possible is a rewarding experience. On th e other ha nd thou gh it makes on e wond er how man y of these re markabl e low-budget odd ities, personal l ove affairs of directors never quite famous and now all but forgot ten, have alm ost forever slipped from memory n any case what we have here is a little post-a pocalyptic gem from Poland that is rea lly better t han it ha s any right to. Th e dystopian near future of O- BI, O-B A finds a group of survivors of the nuclear war that ravag ed the Earth i nhabiting an underworld concrete bunker and biding their time as the y wait for the my sterious Ark , an air s hip of some kind that will come and save them. The Ark pro ves to be an elaborate hoa x, carefully des igned to giv e hope to t he malnour ished and desperate denize ns of the bunker, whi le in the meantime the do me that separates their miserable existence from the nuclear winter outside is slowly caving in. What first stri ked me about the movie is th e design of the bunker and the depiction o f the survivors. T he survivo rs are gaun t, filthy and terrible -looking penitents, dress ed in rags a nd aimlessly wand ering t he n eon-lit halls of the bunk er like automatons. The bu nker is a rundown, seedy place, with bright neon li ghts p eering fr om all sides like the eyes of m align ant beasts. On one hand it is a slightl y 80's depi ction of the dystop ian future but the mov ie n ever stoops dow n to MAD MAX cheese. In stead it combines biting political satire with the bleak outlook of a world with no future, black comedy with barbs on apathy, religion and po wer. The survivors, for example, are fed some kind of fl our dropp ing from a tube that hov ers in the air - later on we discover the f ood super viso r uses books and the Bible itself as filler fo r this meagre meal . The re are many such short symbolic touches, pe rhaps not l ife-changing or faith-rest oring, ye t playful, clever and inspired. One thing is for sure; O-B I, O-BA is not your run-o f-the-mill sci-fi schlock. It overcome s its modest budget with crea tivit y and has genuine artistic aspirations both from a writi ng and direct ing perspective. M y opinion is that it sho uld have been fi lmed in blac k and w hite instead of colour though. The director uses atmospheric light and shadow to great effect and it would have registered even bett er in stark black and w hite. The b lue-green neon on the o ther han d outstay s its welcome after a while. Just a minor gripe in an otherwis e soli d b-movie wit h its hear t set in a ll the right places . I magin e a less bleak THE ROAD (Corm ac McC arthy) being injected with the satire an d humour of D R.STRANGELOVE and you're getting there.
