Having witnes sed his j unkie father killed Russell Stevens grows up to become a p oliceman and make a difference. When he is o ffered an un derc over job by Ge rald Carve r he ac cepts and beg ins to build a relationship with David Jason in ord er to get to the main dealers. Howe ver as he is forced to deal dru gs and kill to keep his cover he finds the lines between cop and crimi nal being lost – is he a cop pretending to be a dealer or a dealer pretending to be a cop Larry (as he w as the n) Fi shburne's first lead role w as a ty pically dark vehicle. The story is the usual one of cop losing himself when undercover, however it manage s to be more than that for most of the time. Co-w ritt en by Tolki n, who w rote The Player, this naturally has a nice cynical edge to it when it looks at the US's hypocritical approach to dru g control and th e political l inks b etwe en the street hustler s and the political hig h rollers who court resp ectability. The story does event uall y settle into a traditional setting but even then it works w ell as a thriller. Th e multi-talen ted Bill Du ke di rect s well with a gritty fe el and a f ew nice touches. Howe ver several things ar e a bit iffy. For most of the fil m Fishburn e's narrationvoice over is a bit l ike a cross between A pocalypse Now and Blade Runner – it come s acr oss as a li ttle too dark and heavy and also exp lains thin gs like we can' t fig ure it out ou rselve s. However once y ou get into the fil m it's not a s big a deal. M y main problem li es with the characters. Fi shburne is e xcellent, a real model of underlying anger and viol ence, Goldb lum is go od but perha ps a little OTT on the yuppieviole nce thing, but there's good su pport from Smith and Spin City's beautiful (and often underused – but not here) Victori a Dil lard. However the two mai n white char acters (Goldblum and Smith) are bot h smeared with rac ist insinuati ons – Smith appears to insul t hi s black off icers and doesn't care about the junkies, while Goldblum i s fascinated about all things black and talks about them as wild beautiful be asts and lov es having sex with b lack'. T hese things are n't a major problem, but with b asically only two white characters in it, it's a little worrying that both are given that edge. However th ese are minor comp laints that get lost with a good thrill er.
