Ho wever as he is forced to deal drugs and kill to keep his cover he finds the lines between cop and criminal being lost – is he a cop pretending to be a dealer or a dealer pre tendin g to be a cop Larry (a s he was the n) Fishbu rne's first lea d role was a typically d ark vehic le. The story is the usual one o f cop losing himself when undercover, however it manages to be more than that fo r most of the time. Co- written by Tolkin, who wrote The Player, thi s naturally has a nice cynical edge to i t when it looks at the US's hypocritical approa ch to drug contro l and the pol itic al links between the str eet hustlers and the political hig h rollers who court respectabi lity. T he story does event ually settl e into a traditional setting but even then it works well as a th riller . The mu lti-talented Bill Duke d irect s well wit h a gritt y feel and a few nice touches. However several thin gs are a bit iffy. For most of the fi lm Fishburne 's narrationvoice ov er i s a bit l ike a cr oss between Apocalypse N ow and Blad e Runner – it comes across as a litt le too dark and heavy and also explains things like we can't f igure it out ourse lves. H owever once you get into th e fil m it's not as big a deal . My main problem lies with the characters . Fi shburne is excellent , a real model of un derlying anger and violenc e, Goldblum is good but perh aps a little OTT on the yuppievio lence thing, but there' s good su pport fr om Smith and Spin Ci ty's be auti ful (and o ften underused – b ut not her e) Victoria Dillard. However the two main white char acters (Goldb lum and Smith) are both smeared with racist insinuation s – Sm ith ap pears to insult his black officers and doesn' t care about th e junkies, while Goldblum is fa scinated a bout all things black a nd talks about them as wild beautiful beasts and loves havi ng sex with black'. The se things aren't a major problem, but with basical ly only two white c haracter s in it, it's a lit tle worrying tha t both are given that edge. However th ese are minor c omplaints that get lo st with a good thrill er.
