Siskel and Ebert once ran a special show enti tled Movies I 'm Embarrass ed to A dmit I Liked. I suppose that i f I composed such a list of guilty pleasures, this on e wou ld be one of them . . . but upon r eflection, it's really a lot better than that . Fifteen year-old science prodigy Mitch (Gabe Jarret) is recruited by ambitious college professor William Ather ton (in yet anoth er of his patented roles as a loathsome character) to w ork on the professor's prize laser project , no t knowing th at the prof is real ly developing a go vernm ent weapon. Al ong the way, Mitch is befriended by Chris (Val Kilmer) , anothe r pro digy a few years his seni or who t eaches th e Mitch how to lo osen up. This could have degenerated into nothing more than just another teen reveng e comedy, but there's so much mor e the dial ogue is laced with sharp wit; there are some lovely scenes that have nothin g to do with the story yet are car eful ly set up, almos t as b lack outs (e.g., Mit ch goes to a lecture a t which a fe w students h ave left tape recorders instead of attending ; later, at another lecture there are more tape recorders than students; a nd, in a f inal scene, one large tape recor der gives the lec ture to a room popu lated by nothing but oth er small recorders!); and throw-away sc enes that m ake you wa nt to stop and back up the tape (e.g., C hris off -handedly cutti ng a slice off a bar o f solid nitrogen to make a slug for the coffee machine). It's also one of the few movies to boast the presence of the memorabl e Michel le Meyerink -- as Jordan, the gir l-nerd who made being sma rt a nd f emale something to be emulated. And there' s Tears for Fears gr eat song, Every body Wants to Rule the World providin g th e perfect coda as the closing c redits begin to ro ll . . . .
