While surv eying a telegraph line in 1861, Wes tern Union engineer E dward Creig hton (Dean Jagge r) is severely injured i n an accident. He is d iscovered by Vance Shaw (R andolp h Scott), an outlaw on the run from a posse. Forced to travel o n foo t after hi s horse was hurt, Shaw at first consi ders stealin g Creighton's horse , but chang es hi s mind and takes the man wit h him, sav ing his life. Someti me later, following his rec overy, Creighton retu rns to Omaha, Nebraska and pla ns the co nstruc tion of a telegrap h line f rom Omaha to Salt Lake City, Utah. Faci ng considerable opposition to the line from Confederate so ldiers, Indians, and outlaws, Creighton elicits the help of his sister Sue (Virginia G ilmore), foreman Pat Grogan (Minor Watson), and assistant Homer Kettle (Chill W ills). Looking to put his o utla w past beh ind him , Sha w arrives at Creighton's Western U nion office looking for honest wo rk and is hire d as a scout by Grogan who is unaware of his past. Crei ghton recognizes him among the men and allows him to s tay des pite his s uspicions. Creighton also hir es tenderfoot Ri chard Blak e (Robert Young), a H arvar d-educa ted engineer as a favo r to Bla ke's fat her. Shaw and Blake are both a ttracted to Sue and vie for her attention, but their romantic rivalry is cut short when construction of the telegraph line star ts on July 4, 1861. After work commences on th e line, one of the men is kil led apparently by a mysterious ba nd of catt le-rustling In dians. Unconvinced that Indians are t o blame, Shaw ri des out to investigate and follows the rustle rs' trail t o the camp of Jack Slade, a former friend and cohort, whose g ang committe d the killing disguised as I ndians—the gang Shaw left f ollow ing his last bank ro bbery . Slade reveals tha t they are working for the Con federacy to disrupt Weste rn Union because they believe the telegraph service will help the Union. Sha w rides a way and r eturns to the l ine. No t wanting to turn in his forme r friends , Shaw tells Creighton that a large band of Dakota Ind ians s tole the cat tle, an d recom mends that they simp ly rep lace the herd and not risk a fight with the Indians. Sometime later, a confrontatio n take s pla ce between men working on the forward line and a ban d of drunken Indians. Whe n one of the Indians tri es to steal some equipment, a nervous Blake shoots him, ignoring Sha w's order to remain calm. Aft er word arrives that the main camp is under atta ck by other Indians, the Wes tern Union men rush back to help with the defense. At the main camp, Slade' s men, who are again d isguised as Indians, steal th e Weste rn Union h orses. The company discover the ruse w hen one of the wounded Indians tur ns out to be a white man. Forced to b uy back their stolen ho rses from Slade , Creighto n becomes suspicious of Shaw's involvemen t, especially when he admits to knowing the gang. Soon the U.S. Army arrives and announces the Indian s have now ref used to allow the tele graph lines to go thr ough their te rritory in respon se to Blake's shooting of t he drunken Indian . Creighton, Sha w, and Blake ride out to convi nce Chief Spotted Horse to allow them to bu ild the l ine throug h Indian terr itory, even though the man Blake wounded was Spotted Hors e's so n. Cr eighton is finally a ble to persuade the Indians t o allow th em passage, and work cont inues until the company appro aches Salt Lake City. Sometime la ter, Shaw receives word that Jack Slade wants to meet wi th him. On the way to s ee Slade, Shaw is captured and bound by Slade's men. S lade says his group is going to burn down the Western Union c amp and they don 't want Shaw to interfer e. After Slade and his men ride off, Shaw escapes from his ropes but arriv es bac k too late to prevent the fire . He helps r escue some of the Western U nion men fr om the flame s and burns h is h ands in th e proces s. After th e fire, Creighton confronts Shaw for an explanation, but Shaw does not reve al what he knows and is f ired by Creighton. A s Shaw leaves the camp, he tells Bl ake that Slade is actually Shaw 's brother and that he, Sh aw, will find Slad e's gang and stop them from interfe ring with the teleg raph project. Shaw rides off and finds Slade and his men in a nearby to wn. At the barber shop, Sha w confron ts his br other, whose gun is concealed under the barber's sheet. Slade shoots Shaw through the sheet. Sh aw fights back in s pite of his wound, killing some of the ga ng members, and then dies. Blake arri ves and continues the fight with Sl ade who dies fr om his wou nds. Soon a fter, the Western Union line is compl eted and the workers celebrate.
