While su rveying a telegraph line in 1861, Western Union engineer Ed ward Crei ghton (Dean Jagger) is severely injured in an acciden t. He is dis covered by Vance S haw (Rand olph Sco tt), an outlaw on the run from a posse. F orced to tra vel on f oot after his horse was hurt, Shaw at first considers stealing Creighton' s horse, bu t changes his mind and takes th e man with him, saving his life. Sometime later, following his recovery, Creighton returns to Omaha, Nebraska and plans the construc tion of a telegraph line from Omaha to Salt Lake C ity, Utah. Fa cing consid erab le opposition to the line from Confederate soldiers , Indians , and outlaw s, Creighton elicits the help of his si ster Sue (Virginia Gilmore), foreman Pat Grogan (Mi nor Watson), and assistant H omer Kettle (Chill Wills). Lo okin g to put his outlaw past behind him, Shaw arrives at Creig hton's Western Union office looking f or honest work and i s hire d as a scou t by Grogan who is unawa re of his past. Creighto n recogniz es him amo ng the men an d allows him to sta y despite his su spicion s. Creigh ton also hires tend erfoot Richard B lake (Ro bert Young), a Harvard-e ducated e ngineer as a favor to Blake's father. Shaw a nd Blake are bot h attracted to S ue and vie for her at tention, but their romantic rivalry is cut short wh en construction of th e telegraph line sta rts on July 4, 1861. After work commences o n the l ine, one of the men is kille d apparently by a myster ious band of cat tle-rustl ing Indians. Unconvinced that In dians are to blame, Shaw r ides ou t to investigate and follows the rust lers' trail to the camp of Jack Slade, a former friend and cohort, whose gang committed the ki lling disguised as Ind ians—th e gang Shaw left f ollowing his last bank robbery. Slade reveal s that they are w orking fo r the Confederacy to disrupt Western Union because they believe the t elegrap h serv ice will help the Union. Shaw rides awa y and return s to the line. Not wanting to t urn in his fo rmer friends, Shaw tells Creighton that a large band of Dakota Indian s stole the cattle, and rec ommen ds that they simply r eplace the herd and not ris k a fi ght with the Indians. Sometime lat er, a confrontatio n takes place betwe en men wor king on the forwar d line and a band of dru nken India ns. W hen one o f the India ns tries to st eal some equ ipme nt, a nervous Blake s hoots him, ignoring Sh aw's orde r to rema in calm. Af ter word arrive s that the main camp is und er attack by other I ndians, the Western Un ion men rush b ack to help with the defense. At the main ca mp, Slade's men, who are aga in dis guised as India ns, steal the Western Uni on horses. The company discover t he ruse when one of th e wo unded Indians turns out to be a white man. Forced to buy back their s tolen h orses fro m Sl ade, Creighton becomes susp icious of Shaw's involvem ent, esp ecially wh en he adm its to knowing the gang. So on the U.S. Army arrives and announc es the I ndians have now refuse d to allo w the telegraph lines to go throu gh their territory in response to Blak e's shooting of the drunken Indian. Creighton, Shaw, and Blake ride out to convince Chief Spotted Horse to allow them to bu ild t he line thro ugh Indian territory , eve n though the man Bla ke wounded was Spo tted H orse's son . Creighton is fina lly able to persuade the Indians to allo w them passa ge, and work continues un til the company appr oaches Sal t Lake City . Sometime lat er, Shaw rece ives w ord that Jac k Slade wa nts t o meet with him . On the wa y to see Slade, Shaw is captured and bo und by Slade's men. Slade says his group is going to bu rn down the Western Union camp an d they don't want Shaw to interfer e. After Slade an d his men ride off, Shaw e scapes from his rop es but arrives bac k too late to prevent t he fire . He helps rescue some of the Western Un ion men from the flames and burns his hands in the proc ess. After the fire, Creighton confro nts Shaw for an explanation, but Shaw does not reveal wha t he knows an d is fired by Crei ghton. As Shaw leaves the camp, he tel ls Blake that Slade is actually Shaw's brother and that he, Sha w, will find Slade's gang and s top them from int erfering with the telegraph project . Shaw rid es off a nd finds Slade and his men in a nearby town. At the b arber s hop, Shaw confronts his brother, whose gun is concealed under the barber's sheet. Slade shoots Shaw through the sheet. Shaw fi ghts back in spite of his woun d, k illing some of the gang members, and then dies. Blake ar rives and cont inues the fight w ith S lade w ho die s from his wounds.
