Unfortunately, Death has not had a vac ation in recorded history , but Mitchell Leisen’s 1934 fantasy, Death Ta kes a Holiday, allows us to consider the possibility. Co-written by Maxw ell An derson and Gladys Lehman and based on the play La Morte in Vacanza by Al berto Casel la, Death Takes a Holiday stars Frederic Marc h as the Gri m Reaper who takes on human form in an attempt to dis cove r why men f ear him so much. Why he has wait ed 5,000 years to satisfy this curiosity is not explained. [Spoiler] Af ter a brief tryout as a shadowy figure who scares the daylights out of those that cross his path, Death shows up at, of all places, an u pscal e party at an Italian villa, posing as t he mysterious Prince S irki. Only o ne person knows wh o he really is, the host Duke Lambert (Guy Standing), and he is s worn to sec recy. Sirki p roceeds to fascina te the guests. Given to bursts of wit and poetry , he can just as quickly turn sullen and threateni ng, and some soon find out that it i s better not to look too dee ply into his eyes. During the th ree days in whic h the Pri nce is at the villa, howe ver, peopl e all over th e world mira culously escape death and potent ial suicides are do omed to frustration. To see what’s behind all the conversation about love, the suave but naïve Prince Sirki f alls for the irresistible G razia (Evelyn Vena ble), the daughter of one of Du ke’s frie nds. Grazia knows who D eath is but does not f ear him , much to the c hagrin o f her fian cé, Corra do (Kent Taylor) who has de veloped a strong disdain fo r Pri nce Charming . More sinister than Brad Pitt i n the 199 8 remake Meet Joe Bl ack, March turns in a very convincing performance as th e creepy yet strangely appealing guest. Although the ending is melodr amatic, the emotions are very real and the suggestion that Death may in re ality be a f riend disguise d as a foe is quite touching. (this is probably a paraph rase), but a t heart, I'v e never felt that you could honestly call that movie a lo ve story. The tag line would be much more appro priate for t his on e, since it ultimately boils down to what amounts to a l ove story. Thi s movie is very good indee d, part icularly if you consider that it is built around a concept that c ould have easily been ha ndled in a cute or facile mann er. Instead, i t is handl ed as seri ously as possible, with so me real th ought put i nto how death w ould try to com e to te rms with a life an d an outlook that was to that point totally unfamiliar to hi m; much of the credit does g o to F redric March in t he title role. It's quite scary when it needs to be, par ticularly du ring the first t wenty mi nutes. From then on, it deals with its the mes with subtlety, a quiet w it, a n enduring sadness, and an everpresent ten sion on how Death might react if crossed. It's not perfect; some of the dial ogue is self-conscio us and artificial, as if the writers knew the y wer e dealing with weight y issues and were trying t o be p rofound. But I am certa inly glad they did n't try to turn it into a musical comedy of sorts.
