Beca use I could not stop fo r Death, h e kindly stopped for me; the carriage held but just ourselves and immortality” – Emily Dickinson If De ath took a holiday, the guns would go silent in Iraq, the slaughter on ou r nation’s highw ays would cease, and the new s media would be compelled to cover positive even ts in the hu manitie s, arts , and sciences. Unfortunately, De ath h as not ha d a vacation in recor ded history, but Mitchell Leisen’s 1934 fa ntasy, Death Takes a Holid ay, allows u s to consider t he possibility. Co-written by Max well Ander son and Gladys Lehman and based on the play La Morte i n Vacanza by Al berto Casella , Death Takes a Holiday star s Fre deric Marc h as the Grim Reaper who t akes on human for m in an at tempt to discover why men f ear him so much. Why he has waited 5,000 years to satisfy this curi osity is not explained. [Spoi ler] After a brief tryout as a shadow y figure who scares the daylights out of those that cross his path, Death shows up at, of all places, an upscale part y at an Italian villa, posing as t he myst eriou s Prince Sirki. Only one person knows wh o he rea lly is, the host Duke Lambert (Guy Standing) , and he is sworn to secrecy. Sirki proce eds to fascinate th e guests. Given t o bu rsts of wit and poetry, he can just as quickl y turn sull en and t hreatening, and some soon f ind out that it is b etter not to look too deeply in to his eyes. Durin g the three days in which th e Prince is at the vill a, how ever, pe ople all ove r the world m iraculous ly e scape deat h and po tential sui cides are doomed to f rust ration. To see what’s behind all th e conversation abou t love, the suave but naïve Pr ince Sirki falls for the irresistible Grazia (Ev elyn Venable), the da ughter of one of Duke’s friends . Grazia knows who Death is but does not fear him, mu ch to the chagrin o f her fiancé, Corrado (Kent Taylor) who has develop ed a stro ng dis dain for Pr ince Charming. More si nister than Brad P itt in the 1998 remake M eet Joe Black, Marc h turns in a very convincing p erformance as the creepy yet st range ly appealing gu est. Although the endi ng is melod ramatic, the emotions are very real and the suggestion t hat Death m ay in reality b e a fri end disguised as a foe is quite t ouching. (Howard Sch umann, talkingpi x.co.uk) In this wea risome and predicta ble plot line, Death f alls in love and bores us to death t alking about it. (Dennis Schwar tz, home pages.sover.net) I've heard DRACULA was ad vertised with the tag line The Weirdest Love Story ever told! (this i s probably a paraphrase), but at h eart, I've never felt that you could honestly call that m ovie a love story. The tag line would be much mo re appropriate for this one, sinc e it ultimat ely boil s down to what amo unts to a love story. This movie is very good indeed, particula rly if you consider that it is built aro und a concept that c ould have easily been han dled in a cut e or facile m anner . Instead, it is handled as seriously as possible , with some real thought put into how death w ould try to co me to terms with a life and an outlo ok that wa s to that point totally unf amiliar to him; much of the cre dit does g o to Fredric March in the title role. It's quite s cary when it needs t o be, par ticularly during the f irst twenty minutes. From then on, it deals with it s them es with subtlety, a quiet wit, an enduring sadn ess, and an everpresent tension on how Death migh t rea ct if cros sed. It's not perfect; some of t he dialogue is s elf-conscious and a rtificial, as if the writers knew they were deal ing with we ighty issues a nd w ere trying to be pro foun d. But I am certainly gl ad they di dn't try to turn it into a musical comedy of sorts. ( Dave Sindelar, scifilm.org ) S ee als o the re make Death Takes A Holiday (19 71) 星辰影院为您提供《死神假期》完整未删减版免费在线观看。
