New York private detective Duncan Mac MacLain is bl ind but ha s keenly de veloped all his oth er sen ses. He pursues his work assist ed by his faithful guide dog Frid ay, his but ler, Alistair , and his assi stant, Marty. Retired actress Norma Law ry, an old friend, comes t o Mac seeki ng advice. Her he adstrong 17-year-old st ep-daug hter Bar bara, herself a pr omising actress, i s enamored with her le ading man in a small theater production, the much older Lothario Paul Gerente. Paul, who had once be en Norma' s lover, has conv inced Barbara that Norm a actua lly wants Paul for herself and has only marri ed her fa ther St ephen f or his money . At Mac's urging, Norma tried to reason with Paul, but he insi sts that he lov es Barbara and lau ghs her off. Barba ra is equal ly disdain ful of her and agrees t o mee t Paul for dinner th at night at his apartment. Norm a's husband Stephen Lawry is a scient ist l eaving that night on a trip to test a secre t inve ntion on which he has been working for the governm ent and the war effo rt. W orried about Barbara, she uses a p retext not to accomp any Stephen an d goes to t he apartment. When Barbara arrives, she fi nds Paul's d ead body and thinks that Norma has killed him, even t hough Norma insists that he was dead wh en she arrived. Barbara thre atens to call the po lice unless she leaves Stephen. Fearing that a scandal will hurt him, Norma a grees. Norma then turns to Mac, who goes to Paul's apartment wit h Fri day and M arty, only to find the body and the rug under it missing. A man arrives t o replace the rug an d Mac hides in a closet, over hearing a telephone call to Norma's n umber fr om Gabr iel t o Ver a. Mac acc identally gives himself a way, but with Friday's he lp overpowers Gab riel, who refuses to talk . Ma c has Marty hid e him to ke ep him u nder w raps. Norma returns to h er country home unexp ectedl y, which d iscourage s an espionage ring th at incl udes her butler, Han sen, fr om breaking into Stephen 's safe and stealing his plans. They ha ve killed Ge rente, who was a lso an agent, and hidden the b ody. Mac arrives wit h Friday at Nor ma's house and pretends to be her curmud geonly Uncle Mac w ho has com e for a visit. His b lindness lulls any suspic ions Hansen might h ave about him. Sh ortly therea fter, Barbara comes home from an emergency reh earsal, called to g et her ou t of the hou se by her director, Cheli Scot t, who inveig les an invitation to spend the nigh t at the Lawry home . Unknow n to Ba rbara and Norma, Cheli is the ringlead er of the spies. Cheli ordered Paul killed because his affec tion f or Barbara was b eginni ng t o limit his effe ctiveness, and she imme diately suspec ts Mac is not what he seems. Gab riel's wife Vera, t he Lawrys' maid, is also a part o f the plot. When G abriel does not r eturn home, Vera bec omes hy sterical with w orry. Mac secretly as ks Vera to mee t him in the greenhou se, using he r wor ry about Gab riel a s a lure. She is ob served by the others, however, and i s ki lled by Han sen befor e she can reach Mac. The spies cu t the house' s telephone wires so that Mac and Norma ca nnot call th e police, and Cheli has Mac locked up under guard. Using his blindness a s a distraction, M ac o verpowers his gu ard and rele ases Fr iday out a window with instructio ns to go home and get Ma rty. Steph en arrives h ome and Chel i threatens his fam ily if he d oes not give her the final step in creating his invention, w hich was not in the safe. Barbara finally reali zes how much Norma actual ly cares for her. Mac tries to stall for time, but is locked in the cell ar. When Han sen goes to kill him, Mac has broken the l ight bulb and hi s advant age of tot al dar kness help s him overco me the spy. Marty and Friday return with the police. When Friday is spotted by a lookout , Mac overpowers him and is saved from being shot by another lookout by Frid ay.
