New York private detective Duncan Mac MacLain is blind but has keenly developed all hi s other se nses. He pursu es his work assisted b y his faithful guide do g Friday, his butler, Alistair, and his assist ant, Marty. Reti red actress Norma Lawry, an old frien d, comes t o Mac seeking advice. Her headst rong 17-year-old step-daughter Barbara, hers elf a promising actre ss, is enamored wit h her leading man in a small theater productio n, the much ol der Lothario Pa ul Gerent e. Paul, who had onc e been Norma's love r, has con vinced Barbara that Norma actually wants Paul for h erself and has only married her father Stephen for his money. At Mac's urging, Norma tried to reason with P aul, but he insists that he love s Barbara and lau ghs her off. Barbara is equall y disdain ful of her and agrees to meet Paul for dinner that night a t his apart ment. No rma's husband Stephen L awry is a scientis t leaving that night on a tri p to test a secret invention on which he has been wo rking for the government an d the war effort. Worried ab out Barb ara, she uses a pretext not to accompa ny Stephen and goes to the apartment. When Barbara arri ves, she finds Paul's de ad body and thinks t hat No rma has kille d him, e ven though Norma insists that he was dead when she arrived. Barbara threa tens t o call the p olic e unle ss she leaves Stephen. Fear ing that a scan dal will hurt him, Norma agrees. Norma t hen turns to Mac, who g oes to Paul's apartment wit h Frida y and Marty, only to find the body and the rug under it mi ssin g. A man arrives t o replace t he rug and Mac hide s in a closet, overhearing a tele phone call t o No rma's number from Gabriel to Vera. Mac accidentally gi ves himself away, but with Friday's help overpowers Gabriel, who refuses to talk. Mac has Marty hide him to keep him under wraps. Norma r eturns to her country home unexpectedly, wh ich discourages an espionage ring that includes her b utler, Hansen, from breaking into Stephen's safe and stealing his plan s. T hey have kil led Gerente, who was a lso an agent, and hi dden th e body. Mac arrives with Frid ay at No rma's house and pretends to be her curmudgeon ly Unc le Mac who has come f or a visit. His blin dness lul ls any susp icions Hansen mig ht have about him. Shortly thereaf ter, Barb ara comes home from an eme rgenc y rehearsal, called to get her o ut of th e house by her direc tor, Che li Scott, who inveigles an invitat ion to spend the nig ht at the L awry hom e. Unknown to Barbara and Norma, Ch eli is the rin gleader of the spies. Cheli order ed Paul killed because hi s affecti on for Barbara was be ginning to l imit his effectiveness , and she i mmediately suspects Mac is not what he seems. Ga briel's wife Vera, the Lawr ys' maid, is also a part of the plot. When Gabriel doe s not return home, Vera becom es hysterical with worry.
