Morse is t aken se riously il l at a museum reception and is hospitalized. In the hosp ital, Sup t. Strange, visits M orse to push him to ta ke early re tirement, while Dr. M illicent 'Millie' Van Buren gives him h er bo ok on a 140 year-old court case known as the Oxford Cana l Murders. The case involved the murder and rap e of a young woman, Mrs Joanna Franks, traveling by ca nal boat fro m Coventry to Lo ndon. The case resulted in three boa tmen being sentenced to death and tw o of them hanged. Mors e starts to read Mill ie's book and dreams about it. He soon has a number of pr oblem s with the c ase. Onl y Mrs Franks' husband, Charles Franks, was called to ident ify th e body of the dead w oman . He c laimed tha t, w hile her fa ce was darkened and disfigured, he found a bi rth mar k behind her ear. T he prosec utor welco med that inf ormation that only a hu sband or a lover would know. The accused were not shown the body. The defense a ttorney merely clai med that the g uilt of the t hree men was not prove d. All three accus ed claimed t o the end that t hey w ere innoc ent. One o f the m was not executed bec ause he em braced Christiani ty in pri son. Morse instructs Kershaw to investigate i f Cha rles Franks benefi ted f rom his wife's death an d, indeed, he pocketed 300 pounds insuran ce mon ey. Case closed Charle s Franks murdered a tall women and dropped her in the canal after meeting Joanna in the forest. If Joanna Franks jumpe d off the bo at at the same time as the dead body hi t the water, she s wam to the bank a nd joined her husban d. Th e couple changed their na mes, in the case of 'C harles Fra nks' a seco nd time after he 'died' as Joanna's first husband. The fourth boatman, a youngster who was not charged, w as prob ably paid by Joan na to give false testimony . Morse travels to Ir eland and has a grave of Joanna's first hus band exhumed .
