Ashok 's extended family includes h is wife Radha (Shaban a Azm i), his brother Jati n (Javed Ja ffrey), t heir ailing mother Biji (Kushal R ekhi) a nd their ma nservant Mundu (Ranjit Chowd hry), all living under the same roof . Jatin, at the insiste nce of Ashok and their moth er, Biji, ag rees to m arry the beautiful S ita (Nandita Das) in an arrang ed marriage, although he is actually in love w ith J ulie (Al ice P oon), a Chinese-Indian. While Ashok is an ascetic who has take n a vow o f celibacy, Jatin is a handsome la dies' man who is still openly seeing Julie e ven after his marriage to Sita.
