Elem Klimov' s grief-stricken elegy Lari sa examines the life of his late wife—the film director Larisa Shepitko—through a serie s of di rect-address interviews and ph otomontag es, set against a mournful visual-musical backdro p. Typically, Klimov films his subjects (w hich includ e himself and several of Shepitko's c ollabor ators) wi thin a s tark, snow-c overed fo rest, i ts tangle d web o f trees standing in a s metaphorical representation of a pe rhaps inexpressible sufferin g, the resu lt of Shepitko's premature deat h while fi lming h er adaptation of Valentin Rasputi n's novella Farewell to Matyora. Interweaving home movie footage with sequences from Shepitko 's work (Maya Bu lgakova's pensive plane crash reminiscence from Wings takes o n seve ral new laye rs of resonance i n this context), Larisa's mo st powerful pas sage is its fi rst acco mpanie d by the grandiose final music cue f rom S hepitko's You and I, Klimov di ssolves betwee n a series of perso nal p hotogra phs that encompass L aris a's entire life, from birth to death. This brief symphony of sorrow a nticipates the catha rtic reverse-mot ion c limax of Klimov' s Come and See , though by pl acing the scen e fir st within La risa's chronology, K limov se ems to be w orking against catharsis .
