This is an unusual film of excep tion al values-- 75 m inutes long in color, with hardly any spoken dialogs. I saw this Iranian film in Farsi with out E nglish subt itles at the Earl y Iranian cinema retrospective on-goi ng Inte rnational F ilm Festival of Kerala, In dia. That I was watchi ng a print w ithout su btitles did no t make a d ifference a s there were very fe w lines of spoken dialogs. This is a very acc essible fi lm for any audienc e to enjoy --its stor y and values are not merely Iran ian, it's universal. The film is set in rural Ira n that had not tasted pet ro-dollar prosperity. The setting is on fringes of de sert land, where water is scarce, rainfall scanty and hardly a ny blade of gr ass is green. Add to it wind and dust that buffets and whips man and animal a nd you can imagine plight of the people who live on the fringe s of society. Th e film is mo ving tale of a yo ung teenager returning to hi s village with a goat--only to find his family and v illagers have moved on to escape nature s vagaries and that one old m an remains. He gives the goat to him and goes in sea rch of his family.
