Dear Brigitte is one of the funniest comedies from the 1960s, about a tone-de af, col or-blind boy ge nius with one interest Brigitte Bardot. James Stewart plays profes sor Rob ert Leaf, a typical colleg e professor (when speaking of college professo rs typ ical means libe ral, but this was 40 years ago and l abels change). Leaf teaches poetry, lives in a houseboat in San Francisco, v ocall y opposes nuclear power and progress in gen eral. He has an ori ginal way to make the famil y stick together - family concerts. His daug hter calls him square. L eaf's 8 -year old s on Erasmus is played by Bil ly Mumy (Sam my the Way Out Sea l, Lost In Space, Bles s The Beas ts Children, Three W ishes). Leaf hopes to find artistic genius of some sort in his only son, and nu rtures hi m in music, pain ting, literature, etc. But Leaf is disappointed, to put it mil dly, wh en it tur ns out Erasmu s ha s a gift for math, can out-think the colleges newest co mputer, instantly compute horse- race winners. I don't wa nt to give a way too much of the plo t, but Erasmus had bee n writing to Bardot reg ularly, and after the family comes to depend on his ability, hi s love-sickness causes a mental block. Gly nis Johns (Father 's D elica te Cond ition, The Cabin et of Calig ari, Mary Poppins) plays Leaf's wife. Ed Wynn (Requ iem For A H eavyweight, M ary Poppins ) is a nei ghbor capt ain narrator. Other c ast include Fabian, Cindy Carol, John Willia ms, Je sse White, Jack K ruschen, and Jame s Brolin in an early bit p art.
