The setting is Vienna in 1914 before the ou tbreak of war. The aris tocratic an d somewhat jaded Prin ce Nicki, pursued by al l the ladies, begins a flirtat ion with M itzi, a crippled harpi st who works in a suburban w ine-garden, and who is in turn idolized by Schani, an unc outh and violently jealous butcher. Their first encounter si gnificantly takes place in fr ont of St. Stephen's Cathedra l on Corpus Chris ti day, with Nicki among the emperor's cavalry regiment. Later , in the refracted light of falling apple blossoms in the wine-g arden--scenes of a distilled, ether eal beauty--Nicki gradually wins her faith and love. Meanw hile, amidst the sump tuous and c orrupt milieu of the family palace , Nicki i s drawn into compl icity again st his will, as hi s unscrupulous mother informs him h e must marry Cece lia, the daughter of a wealthy c ommoner, in order to revive t he family f ortun e. Mitzi has a vision of The Iron Man (a symbol of the declin ing power and position of the Hapsbu rg d ynasty) and falls before th e crucifix in fe ar; but her love remains steadfast, and she pro tests her faith though abused by her mother and S chani. Infuriate d by her rejecti on, Schani threatens to kill Nicki on his wedding day unless Mit zi agrees to ma rry him.
