The film opens with a narrated disclaimer over footage of an o pening coffin. The narrator explains that the fi lm's climax is so te rrifying tha t it may ki ll the viewer, and reassures the audien ce that if t hey die of fright while watching the film, they will receiv e a free burial service, a nd it closes on the casket which h as a card inside readi ng Reserve d for Yo u.[1] Newl yweds Jenni (Peggy Webber) an d Eric (J ohn Hudson) move into Eri c's p alatial country home. Jenni i s Eric's second wife; his first wife Marion died when she accidentally sl ipped and hit her hea d on th e ed ge of a decorative pond o n the estate. At the home they meet Eric's friends, the Reveren d Snow (Ru ss Conway) and his wife (Toni Johnso n), as well as Mickey ( Alex N icol), the d evelopmenta lly dis abled gardener. Eric p rivately mentions to the Snows that Je nni sp ent time in an asylum f ollowing the su dden death of both her parents, and M rs. Snow revea ls that Je nni is very wealthy. Je nni is disturbed both by Mi ckey's belief that Marion's ghost wa nders the estate and b y Marion 's self-portrait inside the house, which Jen ni believ es resembles her m other. When she begins to hear unexplained screaming noises and see skulls around her house, she believes that Marion is haunting her. Th ough Eric spec ulates to Je nni that Mickey, who was a childhood friend of Marion a nd thus disl ikes Jenni, may be behind the trickery, Jenni worries that she is going insane. Eric t hen sug gests to remove Ma rion's self-portrait from th e home. E ric and Jenni tak e the pa inting outside and burn i t. While they cle an up the remains of the p ainting, a skull emerges from the ashes. While Jenni panics at the sight o f the skull, Eric denies that the sku ll is there. Jenni fain ts a nd Eric withdraws the sk ull and hide s it, r evealing that he wa s responsible for the tric kery all along in an effort to get hold of her wealth. Believing sh e has finally lost her sanity, Jenni re solve s to be c ommitted. She tells Eri c that th e entire prope rty will be meticulously searched for the skull as a last resor t. Be fore Eric can re trieve it, Mick ey secret ly stea ls the skull and brings it to the Reveren d, revealing Eric's plans. That ni ght, Eric p repares to murder Jenni a nd stage it as a suicide. Jenni see s Marion's ghost in Mi ckey's gree nhouse and flees back t o th e house. When she enter s, Eri c begins thr ottling her. Th e ghost then appears and chases Eric o utside and about the property; it f inally corners and at tacks him, drownin g him in the decorative pond. After Jenni regains consciousnes s, t he Snows arrive. Mrs. Snow comfor ts a hyst erical Je nni and the Reverend discovers Eric' s body in the pond. Some und isclosed ti me late r, Jen ni and the Snows depart from the ho use.
