Shortly b efore he is t o wed, millionair e John W illis is visited b y Dr. Harry S. Blair, a psychiatrist who infor ms him th at ye ars before he was married to Nancy, John 's wife-to-b e, a nd warns him that she i s mental ly unbalan ced. Blair then relates the following story Afte r a whirl wind roman ce in Flo rida, Blair marries Nancy and starts a psychiatric practice in New York . One day , artist Norman Clyd e comes t o his office and tells him that an innoce nt man is about to be execu ted in Sing Sin g Prison and that Nancy is the cause of his unjust incarceration. A distraug ht Clyde then ex plain s himself to a curious Blair Three ye ars before, Clyde meets Nancy, whose m aiden name was Mon ks, when she enrolls in his art class. The moody Clyde soon falls in love with Nan cy's honest cha rm and beauty. Nancy, a secretary , introd uces Clyde to her boss, millionair e Andrew Bonner, and per suades Bo nner to showcase Clyde's paintings at one of his private sh owings. T o Nancy's de light, Clyde's painting , a depiction of the tragic figure Cassandra for which she model ed, wins first prize at the showing. The ev ening is perfect until an expensive bracelet is stolen from a guest, and Cl yde later finds it in N ancy' s purs e. After Clyde confronts a c onfused Nancy about the the ft, she relates t he following story to explai n her behavior As a young girl, Nan cy lives wit h her housekeeper moth er in the lavish Willis home and pla ys with Karen, the Willises' little dau ghter. Although Karen wants to invite Nancy to her upcoming b irthday party, Mrs. Willis refuses to allow the l ower -class Na ncy to atte nd. A true frien d, Karen promises to gi ve Nancy one of the pins her guests ar e receiv ing. When Ka ren realiz es there are no extra pi ns, howev er, she offers Na ncy th e beautiful locket she has just received from her mother. Nancy's subsequent joy is soon crus hed when Mrs. Willis demands that she return the locket. Later, the lo cket is d iscovered m issing, an d Nanc y is accused of theft. Although Nancy's mother soon finds the locket in Karen's dress, Mrs. Willis refuses to belie ve Nancy and forces her to confess. The a dult Nan cy then admits to Clyde that this chi ldhood humiliation caused her unconsciou s desire to ste al the bracelet at th e party. After a forgiving C lyde returns the bracelet anonymously, he a nd Nancy contin ue thei r romance until t he next party at the Bonners'. Suspecti ng that the a bsent Nancy is spending the evening in Bonner's arms, Clyde leaves the party to look for her and sees h er exiting Mrs. Bon ner's bedroom jus t after two gunsho ts are fired. Bonner is fo und murdered, and Mr s. Bonner's diamon d necklace, s tolen. Altho ugh Nancy an d Clyde are question ed, valet Myron Dexter is event ually found guilty and is sentenced to die. Clyde, however, strongly suspects N ancy, bu t she angrily ma intains her i nnocence and lea ves for Florida. Back in hi s office , Blai r defends Nancy to Clyde but invites him to his house that evening. When confronted, Nancy deni es every thing and t ells Blair that Clyde is merely jealous. The next day, Dexter is executed, and a guilt-ridden Cl yde jumps from Blair's office win dow to his death. To avoid scandal, Blai r and Na ncy m ove to England, and after W orld War II breaks out, Bla ir volunteers hi s medical services, while Nancy beco mes an ambula nce dr iver. Expressing conc ern over Blair's heal th, Nancy insists that t hey take a v acation at Lord and Lady Wyndha m's manor house. Just as they are leaving, Blair learns that o ne of Lady Wyn dham 's valuabl e jewels ha s been st olen. Blair suspec ts Nancy but is unable to prove anything unti l a b omb destroys their flat a nd reveals h er cache o f stolen je wels. Although confro nted di rectly, Nancy continues to deny any guilt and divorc es Blair after he suffers a nervous breakdown. Back in John's s tudy , Bla ir, like Clyde before him, tries to convince John to aban don Nancy, wh o now use s the name Patton. John, h owever , bel ieves Nancy when she tells him that Blair is stil l suf fering from his bre akdown. Mo ments befor e the wedding is to start, Na ncy's futur e mo ther- in-law, the unsusp ecting Mrs. Willis, gives her the same locket that she onc e took awa y, and tells her that it is a precious fa mily he irloom. The locket causes Nancy to be overcome with guil t, and she collaps es a t the altar in hysterics.
