The main character i s Dr. Max Holst, a su ccessful neurosur geon. One day an intense litt le man named Steinmetz shows up, who h as the real abil ity to create o bjects out of thin air, usi ng only his mind. As no one belie ves him at first, he is he ld at a ward fo r mental patients, but manif ests the ke y to his door and escapes. As he has a special interest in Dr. Ho lst, Stein metz sub sequently inv ites Holst to his large mansion, which i s ful l of expensive paintings and scul ptures, and proves to him th at he can in fact mat erialise o bjects. Steinmetz’s abi lities are evolving by leaps and boun ds, and is progressing from being able to create objects only to being able to create living things. His ultimate ambition is t o be able to create a human being . He tells Dr. Ho lst tha t if he will only perform a certain brain operation on hi m, Stei nmetz will become able t o att ain his goal. He’s got all the nec essary equipment set up in his basement. Dr. Holst, however, is too spooked by the whole thing to agr ee to this mad scheme, and refuses. Steinmetz then sets about manipulating Holst’s life, to pressure him int o performing the op eration. By then Steinm etz has become ab le to c reate a temporary human being, and i n th e hope that he can perhaps make his own creation perform the ope ration, he manifests a dop pelgange r of Dr. Holst. This doub le proceeds to take over Dr. Holst’s life, cr eating chaos for him profess ionally and personally. And then D r. Holst starts fighting back.
