The scenes of the confu sed, troubled monster hurtling through a fog-shrouded forest at night are memorable and striking, as is a brilliant home movie-style m ontage of the film's more curious cha racters enjoying a p recious afternoon at the beach . Kaw amura creates reso nating vis ual poetry of horror and sadnes s barely sighted since Todd Browning's cla ssic Freaks.
