New York private detective Duncan Mac Ma cLai n is blind but has keenly deve loped all his other senses. He pursues his work assis ted by his f aithful guide dog Friday, his butler, Alistair, and his assistan t, Marty. R etired actr ess Norma Lawry, an old frien d, comes to Mac seeking adv ice. He r headst rong 17-year-old step-daughter Ba rbara, he rself a promising actress , is enamored with her leading man in a small the ater p roduction, the much older L othar io Paul Gerente. Paul, who had once be en Nor ma's lov er, has co nvinced Barbara th at Norma ac tually wants Pa ul for he rself and h as only ma rried her father Stephen f or his money. A t Mac's urgi ng, Norma tried to reas on with Pau l, but he i nsist s that he loves Barbara a nd lau ghs her off. B arbara is equally disdainful of her and agrees to meet Pau l fo r dinner that night at his apartment. Norma's husband Stephen Lawr y is a scientist leaving that night o n a trip to test a sec ret invention on which he has been working for t he government and the war effort. Worried about B arbara, she uses a pretext not to accompany St ephen a nd g oes to the apartme nt. When Barbara arrives, she find s Paul's dead body and thinks that Norma has killed him, even though No rma insis ts th at he was dead when she arrived . Barbara threaten s to call the police unless she leaves Stephen. Fearing that a scan dal wi ll hur t him , Nor ma agre es. Nor ma then turns to Mac, who goes to Paul's apa rtment with Friday and Marty, only to find the body and the r ug u nder it m issing. A man arri ves to rep lace the rug and M ac hides in a closet, overhearing a telephone call to Norma's number from Gabriel to V era. M ac ac cidental ly gives hi mself away, but with Friday's help o verpowers Gabriel, who refuses to talk. M ac has M arty hide him to keep him under wraps. N orma r eturns to her country home unexpe ctedly, which discourages an espionage ring that includes her butler, Hansen , from break ing into Stephen's s afe and stealing his plans. They h ave kille d Gerente, who was also an agen t, and hidden the body. Mac arrives with Fri day at Norma's house a nd pr etends to be he r cu rmudgeonly Uncle Mac who has come for a visit. His b lindness lulls any susp icions Hansen might have about him. Sh ortly there after, Barbara come s home from an emergency rehearsal , calle d to get her out of the hou se by her dire ctor, C heli Scot t, who inveigles an invitation to spend the night at the L awry home. Unknown to Barbara and No rma, Cheli is the ringleader of the spies. Cheli order ed Paul killed because his affe ction for Barba ra was begin ning t o limi t his effectiveness, and she immedia tely suspects Mac is not what he see ms. Gabr iel's wife Vera, the L awrys' maid, is also a part of the plot. When Gabriel does not retur n home, Ve ra become s hysterical with worry. Mac secretly asks Vera to meet him i n the greenhouse, usin g her worry about Gabrie l as a lure. She is observed by th e others, however, and i s killed b y Hansen before she can r each Mac. The spie s cut th e house's telephone wires s o that Mac and Norma cannot call t he police, and Che li ha s Mac loc ked up under guard. Using his bli ndness as a dis tract ion, Mac overpowers his guar d and releases Fri day out a window with instructions to g o home and get Marty. Stephen arrives home an d Ch eli threatens his family if he does not give her the final step in creating his invention, which was n ot in the sa fe. Ba rbara finally rea lizes how much Nor ma actually cares for her. Mac tr ies to stall for time, b ut is l ocked in the cellar. When Hansen goes to kill him, Mac has broken the light bulb and hi s advanta ge of total darkness he lps him overcome the spy. Marty and Frid ay return w ith th e police. When Friday is spotted by a lookout, Mac overpo wers him and is saved from being shot by another lookout by Fri day.
