Haunted by the memory of Walter Holde rlin, a soldier he kil led du ring World War I, French musician Paul Renard (Phillip s Hol mes) confe sses to a pri est (Frank Sheridan), who grants him absoluti on. Usi ng the address on a let ter he found on the dead man's body, Paul then travels to G ermany to find his fa mily. As anti-French senti ment con tinues to permea te Germany , Dr. Holde rlin (Lionel Barrymore) initially refuses to welcome Paul into his home, but chang es his mind when his son's fianc ée Elsa identifies him as the man who has been leaving flowers on Walter's grave. Rat her than r evea l the real connection b etween them, Paul tells the Holderlin family he was a friend o f their son, who attended the same musical conservatory he did. Although the host ile town speople and local g ossips disa pprove, the Holderlins befriend Paul, who finds himself falling in love with Els a (Nancy Carroll). When she shows Pau l her former fiancé 's bedroo m, he becomes dist raug ht and t ells her t he truth. Sh e convinces him not t o confess to Walt er's parents, who have embr aced him as their second son, and Paul agrees to forego easing his con science and stays with his adopted fam ily. Dr. Holderlin presents Walter's violin to Paul, wh o plays it w hile Elsa accompanies him on the piano.
