A quick glimpse at the cast for th is film would make any horror fan giddy wit h glee. The actual movie doesn 't live up to those high e xpectatio ns, but it' s far from being a ll bad. Desi Arn az Jr. (!) plays an auth or who makes a crazy $20,000 bet with his publisher that he cou ld write a great novel in only 24 hours. To do so, th e publish er gives him the keys to a n old ab andoned house where he won' t be disturbed. No t true. Once he gets there he is interrupted by a multitude of g uests including a fami ly which cons ists of John Carradine, Sheila Ke ith, Peter C ushin g and Vincent Price. They are gathered there in a twisted family reunion to release th eir brot her from the room he' s been imprisoned in for forty years. Even Christopher Lee drops by as Co rrigan, the man who has just purchased the house. Soon, they realize that the ca ged brother is loose and out for revenge. What a great plotl ine and what a dre am cast! This mo vie should have been a hell of a lot better. It's hard to pinp oint the exact pr oblems with the film, but I would v enture to say that t he lack o f lighting was a major fault. Sure the house has no e lectric ity b ut I think the y took the title of the movie a lit tle too litera lly. Scenes after scenes are barely visible an d th e actors' faces are undecipherable . Only the moments in the main dinning hall are well lit. Also, the great actor s are given very little to do. Cush ing gets a few chuckle s as the scare d brother but Price, Lee an d especi ally Car radine are s omewhat wasted he re.
