This is an interesting yet biz arre little tale of a fictional (as far as I know, anyway) experiment pe rformed during the Stalin-controlled ye ars in the USSR. The main character is changed fro m a woman into a man. Thi s is part of a larger plan to chan ge more wome n into men and have a str onger w ork-forcearmy , etc. It's a very in-depth character study o f the main character, who tries to fit into a world that she (now 'he') doesn't r eall y unde rstand, especially s ince she's now a man ... Stal in dislikes the results of the experiments and has th e scientist killed. Th e main character then goes off to live a life as a simp le, unknown everyday Soviet, but i s inexp licably drawn into larger and larger schemes (somewhat reminiscent of Forrest Gump in that way). (s)He has run -ins with different impor tant characters, i ncluding his ex-boyfri end from his days of being a wom an, as well as going on a demented quest for the nurse with whom he poss ibly fell i n love af ter the op eration.. .
