Sixty Glorious Years is an exercise in the crea tion of iconograph y, both f or Victoria and its star, Anna Neagle (wh o subsequently became kn own as 'Regal Neagle '). Just as Eliza beth I c ommissi oned artis ts to create flattering ico nic image s for pub lic consumption, so this film perf orms a simi lar function, for Neagle i s mor e beautiful than th e real lif e Victori a. C ontrove rsial events (such as the 'Irish problem') are omitted and u npleasant aspects of Victoria's character (her petulance , arro ganc e, favouritism and 'r ight to privil ege') are gloss ed over as e ndearing little 'whims' . Albert ac ts as a moderating influenc e when she goes too far . The film foll owed a year after th e highly successful Victori a the Great (d . Herbert Wilcox, 19 37). Again t he screenplay is by Miles Malleson and Robert V ansitta rt, and many of the supporting cast (the cream of acting talent of pe riod) repeat their roles, this time for t he colour cameras. This was the f irst full length Te chnicolor film of cinema tographer Fre ddie Youn g, who ca ptures the spectac le of royal weddings, grand balls and opul ent inter iors, with scenes actually filmed at r oyal palaces. Vivid battle scene s, set in Alex ander Korda' s empire territory (Sevastopo l and the Sudan), rival those in The Fo ur Feathe rs (d. Zolta n Korda 1939). The title music se ts the tone a regal choir sings over a shot of the crown. Elga r's 1901 'Pomp and Circumstance ' marc h is heard during the diamon d jubilee celebr ations and, as Victoria's coffin lies i n state, the film concludes with Anth ony Co llins' stately mus ic accompani ed by the te xt of Rudy ard Kipling's 'Lest we forget'. Combined with the em otional app eal of scenes of Victoria con nect ing with h er 'o rdinary fo lk', th is is stirri ng stuff . The film connects with con temporary events of 1938 . The releas e of two c elebratory royal films was i ntended to boost public affection for the mo narchy in the wake of Edwar d VIII's abdication. Anglo-German relations were another touchy su bject. With another war on the horizon, influential voices wanted appeasement , and the fi lm could be seen to fit that agenda. Vic toria h erself was of mainly German des cent, nicknamed 'the grandmo ther of Europ e', whi le Albert is a 'good German', charmingly pl ayed by An ton Walbrook as a cul tured, decent m an. Sixty Glorious Years now seems unduly form al and reverent ial. Had movies ex isted duri ng Victoria's reign (they only emerged at the e nd) this m ight have been the kind of f ilm produced. Unlike Mrs Brown (d. John Madden, 1997), it is all so very 'Victoria n'. Roger Philip Mellor 星辰影院为您提供《荣耀六十年1938》完整未删减版免费在线观看。
