Walter Wi llia ms (Brian Donlevy) is a tak e-charge captain of industr y who ha s worked his way u p in a San Francisco ste el company from a position as a sheet met al worker. He loves his wife Irene (Helen W alker) very much and they have planned a vaca tion drive together. Irene ca ncels a t the l ast minute claimin g a toothache, but asks that Walter drive her cousin Jim Torrance (Tony Barrett) as far as Illi nois.
